Svensen upon which a shop and ofhce building is to be erected. A width for this particular service lane. of 20 feet was decided upon, so that buildings on the adjoining properties will be set back ten feet from the section boundaries. ❖ Calcium Chloride For Dust. Following receipt of a letter from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., dealing with the use of calcium chloride on roads to prevent the formation of dust, the Borough Council decided to order five hundredweight of the material with which to experiment on several types of unsealed surface. The Oompany's letter stated that they had no knowledge of its use as yet on pumice, but had used it with success on an area near Auckland. i\ >i >:c Removal of Building. The Building Inspector's report fco the Council stated that a build.ng in Roberts Street, on which he had been instructed to report, had originally been a garage and was locatted in its present position at ohe time Mr W. Price purchased the property. It had been altered and an additional roorn built with a permit. The stud height was approximately T 6" which made the whole building sub-standard as a iwelling. In a letter to the Council Mr W. Price said the building had been altered to provide staff accommodation, but he now found that this had been done contrary to the by-laws, which he regretted. He undertook to have the building removed within two months. The letter was received. % % % Royalty on Gravel. A letter to the Council from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, referring to the removal of gravel from the Tauranga-taupo River by the Tapper Construction Co., Ltd., in connection with the building of the Hinemaiai Hydro-electric Power Station, stated that the Department's demand for royalty followed considerable trouble over other , cases of the unauthorised removal of gravel. However, there was no intention of penalising the Council. If, however, the contractor in tendering had provided for having to pay for gravel there was no reason why payment should not be made by him, and the Commissioner asked what the position had been. , The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, explained that the Company's tender had allowed only for cartage on the gravel, and it was decided to advise the Commissioner accordingly.
