SUPPLY OF GRAVEL

TAUPO'S RUILDING NEEDS Mr R. L. Harnett, of Taupo Transport Ltd., in a letter which came before the Borough Council's recent meeting, stated that he had been advised by the Ministry of Works that he could no longer obtain metal from the Motutere Bay gravel pit, which was shortly to be closed. Mr Harnett pointed out that the Five Mile Gravel Pit, off the Waitahanui Road, did not provide gravel of suitable size for concrete pillar and beam work. He asked whether the Borough, in view of the urgent need for metal in Taupo for constructional works, would take the matter up with the Departments concerned.

Councillors mentioned that the Five Mile Pit had been largely spoiled by the haphazard way in which the Ministry of Works had allowed metal to be removed, the overburden having been stripped without system so that much of the gravel was now full of dirt. It was also stated that the price being charged for royalty was higher than anywhere else in the country. It was decided that the Ministry of Works Engineer, Rotorua, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Hamilton, be written to with a request that a suitable gravel pit be made available from which Taupo's needs could be supplied.
