CRUSADERS MARCHING TEAM VISITS MOUNT
TAUPO GIRLS WIN NOVICE LEADER'S COMPETITION Making their first appearance this season in competitions, the Taupo Crusaders Girls' Marching Team visited Mt. Maunganui on Saturday, February 13, travelli-ng by bus via Rotorua and Paengaroa, to take part in the Mt. Maunganui Championship meeting. Some 13 teams were present, from as far as Paeroa in the north to Taupo in the south, and as far east as Opotiki. The Taupo Team consisted of Shona George, leader; Mina Scott, marker; and Susan Rewa, Margaret Fulljames, Yvonne Sharp, Keren P.eid, Maadi Hough, Hillarie Harnett, Gillian Woodward, - CoraX Armishaw and Harriet Rewa. Two of last year's team, who are marching this year, were not available for the visio, while three new members were marching for the first time in competitions The team was not eligible to compete on this occasion in handicap events this being its fiVst appearance of the season, and as handicaps are allotted only after a first appearance, it accordingiy competed in the open events. The Crusaders won the Nov-ce Leader's Competition, with Shona George as leader, a most ereaitable result for both team and leacor. In such competitions the team plays a vital part, for the leader is judged not only for her own performance but in respect of the response she is able to get from her team. It is to be recalled that last year when the Crusaders visited the Hawke's Bay Championshiips, Shona George was adjudged Miss Hawke's Bay Marching Girl. This season she has been responsible for a large part of the team's training. , The Open Championship was won by the Highland Team, of Tauranga, and the Open Handicap by the Coronets Team, of Opotiki. The Open Leader's Championship was won by the Hauraki Team, of Tauranga, with the Caledonians, of Opotiki, second, and the Crusaders, Taupo, third. In the Teams Relay Race, the Crusaders were fourth, their team consisting of Mina Scott, Hillarie Harnett, Keren Reid and Coral Armishaw. The Crusaders found that where they lost marks was in respect of dressing and covering. This was due to their lack of practice on a suitable ground, there being at present no such ground available in Taupo, and no street or tennis court area large enough for the march plan. In marching it is essential that the girls look ahead at eye level, and this is not possible on rough and uneven ground. The Crusaders team plans to visit Te Puke on February 27.
