ESCAPE FROM HAUTU

PRISONERS RE - C APTURED NEAR WAITAHANUI Two prisoners serving sentences in Hautu Prison, near Turangi, escaped on Friday night, February 12. They were Sydney Julian Clark and Robert Manning Walker. Constable E. H. Rowlands, of Taupo, Who had received advice of the escape and that the men were thought to be proceeding toward Taupo, was on patrol when he saw two men dodge into the scrub on the Lake side of the main highway near Waitahanui. There was a motor vehicle near by. Constable Rowlands followed the men and arrested them. They were later before the Mag~ istrate's Court, Taupo, on charges of being deemed to be incorrigible rogues in that they did escape from legal imprisonment, and were remanded to appear at the Magis- ' trate's Court, Hamilton, on Thurs- ; day February 18.
