TEA ROOMS ON LAKE FRONT ROAD
PERMISSION NOT GRANTED The Taupo Borough Council meeting of Wednesday, January 20 had before it a letter from Mr C. F. Sherley, enqulring whether permission would be granted a prospective purchaser of his residence and section on Lake Terrace Road to conduct an open air tea and refreshment room on the lawns while residing in the existing building. Cr. W. G. Morris said the Council had already refused permission to an applicant for tea-rooms in a residential area, as this was. Further such an establishment in the place mentioned would produce a J traffic bottle-neck through vehicles being parked outside it. They had already had experience of such trouble on this road near the one mile peg. Cr. J. D. Swan agreed. Cr. C. S. Currie thought the case was not quite the same as in the previous one mentioned, as no alteration to the premises was contemplated. He thought parking would not cause any real difficulty. Such a convenience was needed in the locality. Cr. K. O. Lewis said the logical place for tea-rooms in the area was^ at the foot of Mere Road, where previously suggested in discussions by the Town Board, and in any case one similar application had been turned down under the Town Planning scheme. Cr. J. E. Barton did not think the suggestion was bad. There was plenty of room for parking. outsicje the property and some room also on the section itself. something of the sort was a necessity in the area. That day he had seen hundreds of people on the near-by beach. He would not like to see it turned down without full consideration. Cr. K. E. Young mentioned that the highway along Lake Terrace Road was due for resealing and re-alignment and the amount of parking area outside the property might be considerabiy affected thereby. Cr. Swan considered that the proper place for a tea kiosk as discussed some time ago by the Town Board was on the Taharepa Reserve, on the Lake front opposite the Mere Road junction, on top of the cliff. Cr. Barton said that was not where the people congregated. Cr. Swan said that to test the meeting he would move that the application be not granted. Cr J. M. Stanley seconded the motion which was carried.
