MOTUTERE BAY DOMAIN
MINISTER WRITES TO TAUPO MEMBERS As reported in the "Times" of November 20th, the Taupo members of the East Taupo Domains Board, which was set up last August to administer the Motutere Bay Domain Camp, wrote to the Hon. E. B. Corbett, Minister of Lands, and to Mr J. B. Coterill, M.P. (Wanganui), with reference to a reported statement by Mr Cotterill in the j House. This statement suggested i that the Domain Board comprised citizens of Taupo and that they might be trying to drive, people I away from Motutere Bay to Taupo itself.
Mr Corbett has now replied to the Taupo members, Messrs. J. D. Swan, L. H. Cheal, W. T. Irvine and R. H. Ward. The Minister states in his letter that he appreciates that the Board members had reason to be concerned over the reported statement by Mr Cotterill in the House. At the time the statement was made he did not immediately appreciate the purport of it, and had he done so he would not have hesitated at the time to rebut the suggestion. The Minister further states that he has every conhdence in all the members of the Board and feels that the main concern of each one of them is to administer the Domain in the-best interests of the general public. Referring to the area of Crown land across the main highway from the Motutere Domain, Mr Corbett mentions that good progress has been made in making this availablel to the Domain Board. Hitherto this area has been used as a source | of shingle for road sealing operations of the Main Highways Board. Mr Corbett's information now is that the Ministry of Works has intimated that during the forthcoming year it will arrange to back-fill the shingle pits in order that the area may be utilised as an addition to the Domain.
