KINLEITH PAPER MILL IN ACTION

At 10.20 a.m. on Saturday, November 14th, the first pulp entered the giant paper mill machine at Kinleith to begin the process of converting pulp into paper. At 3.20 p.m. paper was rolling off the machine in a long, continuous stream — good quality, ten feet wide brown paper, for use as multiwall bags, wrapping paper, shopping bags, and in laminated form, for export cartons. The pulp' and^ paper superintendent, Mr. J. T. Christiansen, and his assistant, Mr H. Gregory, advised that operations got away to a really excellent start. The Kinleith Paper Mill is the final unit of the £7,000,000 project of N.Z. Forest Products Ltd. to come into production and cost about £1,350,000 of that totalv The plant is entirely British, as are the majority of the key operators who were brought especially from England and Australia. It is believed to be the first paper mill in the Southern Hemisphere using woodpulp produced entirely in the country of establishment. The paper ,will be sent to the Company's Multiwall Bag and Container factories at Auckland, replacing imported paper used since these plants were started. The paper machine operates over a speed range of from 100 to 1100 feet per minute, depending on the grade of paper. Its maximum productive capacity is about 80 tons daily and 25,000 tons a year. i Now that production has commenced the Mill will operate continuously for 24 hours per day and will cease working for only brief periods during the year for maintenance.
