GUIDES' GARDEN PARTY

GUIDES' G ARDEN PARTY

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING There was an attendance of about 200, including children, at a successful Garden Party organised by the Taupo Girl Guide Company and held at Mr and Mrs Peart's residence, Taupo View Road, on Thursday afternoon, November 19. A sum of £31/1/9 was realised, to ^o to the fund for defraying exoenses of the Girl Guides' trip to Rotorua for the Royal Visit. Mr and Mrs Peart's garden and hrubs were seen to great advantage, under ideal weather condithns, and were much admired. Among the attractions were a baby show, in which there were 18 entries, a Whrfce Elephant Stall, and a stall at which cakes, provisions, and sweets were sold. The Girl Guides sang two of their Guide Songs. The proceedings were opened by the Deputy-Mayor, Col. J. D. Swan, and Mrs H. E. Shepherd, President of the Girl Guides' Association, while Miss K. O. Lewis, lady member of the Borough Council, and Mrs Swan, judged the Baby Show. Afternoon tea was served most efRciently by the Girl Guides, half of whom were dressed in long musiin frocks, the others in Chinese costume. The B6y Scouts, under Acting-Scoutmaster Harding, were present and assisted the Guides. Among others present were the Rev. Fr. de Bree and the Rev. C. G. G. Salt.

Before announcing the results of the Baby Show, Miss Lewis made special mention of a Post Guide, a crippled girl living in Auckland, who has been "adopted" by the Taupo Company. Two Taupo Girl Guides of one patrol write to her each week, and .two* others of another patrol send her small parcels weekly, the four Taupo patrols taking their part in this labour of love, whilst the whole company is planning to send a Christmas parcel. The child's parents hope to bring her to Taupo during the Christmas holiday period so that she may meet her Taupo friends of the Guides Company. Miss Lewis congratulated the girls on theii efforts to help their adopted Post Guide, and said that these would not only be of great help to her but would also help them to become better and more thoughtful citizens. The Baby Show results were as follows: Six months to one year, girls, won by Brenda Kruit; boys, won by Allan Wilson. One to two years, girls, won by Donna Brown; boys, won by Wayne Rickard. Two to three years, girls, won by Robin Kildy; boys, won by Garry Alvie. In the one to six months class there was one entry only, seven weeks old Susanne Bond, to whom a special prize was awarded, while all the entrants received a gift. A number of competitions were drawn by Col. Swan, who also presented the prizes, won as follows: Christmas cake, iced and donated by Mrs Snooks, won by Beth Snooks; set of crystal glasses donated by Mr W. J. Stevens, won by Bill Rurell; two canisters of tea donated by K. Russell Ltd., won by Mrs T. Heath; Sunday's dinner donated by Mr A. E. Booth, won by Mrs Godfrey Taylor; box of sweets donated by Brown Owl, won by Mrs Cyril Baker. (Continued on Page 2)
