THIRD DEEP STEAM BOR E, WAIRAKEI

Geothermal steam bore No. 18, the third deep bore to be opened, was "blown" on Wednesday, November 4th. It is situated at the foot of a pine-clad hill slope a short distance off the southern side of the Wai-rakei-Atiamuri road about half a miie from the Hotel Wairakei, and between No. 20, the first deep bpre opened, and No. 19, which was opened some five weeks ago. The photograph above was taken a few minutes after the bore was "blown" just as it began to eject dust and rocks in the process of clearing itseif.. The steam from this bore was drier than that from any of the previous bores drilled at Wairakei. An account of the blowing of this bore was published on the front page of the Taupo "Times" of November 13th last.
