MUNICIPAL NOTES
Dunedin Conference. At the Borough Council meeting on November 18 a letter was read from the Municipal Association of New Zealand asking for the names of the Council's delegates. Cr. Swan eonsidered the Council should be represented by at least two delegates, the Town Clerk and another. Many things would be discussed that would be of value. Cr. Lewis suggested that the delegates be the Town Clerk and Cr. Young. Cr. Young stated that he thought that the Council should be represented by the Mayor and the Town Clerk, particularly so as it was the Council's first year, and moved accordingly. The motion was seconded by Cr. Swan and carried. vi# ?0 ^ Legal Expenses. Among accounts submitted for approval at the recent Council meeting was one for legal expenses £31/10/-. In reply to a couneillor's enquiry as to what this was for, the Town Clerk stated that it was for solicitors costs- in connection with preparatory work re loans and had been owing for some little time. The position was that in connection with earlier loan moneys raised prior to his appointment preparatory work had been done by a firm of solicitors. One account had been for some seventy pounds. However, he himself had for some time done all this work himself at no extra expense to the Council. * *
Amusement Area. Mr W. A. Rogers applied to the Borough Council at its monthly meeting for" permission to lease an area approximately fifty yards by thirty yards* either next to the Post Office or the War Memorial Hall. He proposed to run an amusement area, establishing a putting green, the season to be from October to May. The matter was left to the Works Committee to go into and obtain further details, with power to act. vl» - 'C V New Power Tariff. Cr. Swan enquired whether it was now possible to fix a date from which the new electric power tariff would come into operation. Cr. Young eonsidered it would be dangerous To do this in advance, as the new generator might not be ready, or might take some time to get going, and they would then be faced with an increase of load due to lower charges and find the present small generator hopelessly overloaded. The Mayor intimated that the operation of the reduced tariff would be fixed as soon as was possible. ❖ % ❖
Power Scheme Questions. A TLumber of questions were asked in connection with the municipal Power Scheme at the monthly Council meeting. Cr. Young said that it had been stated that all reticulation work in the Borough had been stopped while the power line to Wairakei was going on, though a number of people had not yet been reticulated. What was the position? Cr. Lewis asked when a number of consumers in Matipo Street would be connected up. Cr. Barton asked when the main generator would be ready. The Mayor stated that Borough reticulation would continue and that it was hoped to complete this, and also to Woodward's Mill, by Christmas
But for a&out six weeks the contractor had had labour difffculties, having only four or five men. He now had ten men and provided these stayed on the job he expected to complete the town area as mentioned. It was hoped to be able to supply power to Wairakei about March. It was hoped to have the main generator in operation about December 15th to 18th.
