REPORTS ON FISHING
"NOT AT ALL BAD" An angler who was asked recently about his luck replied that he had had fishing that "wasn't at all bad." He amplified his remark by stating that during the second week of the season the fishing had been a good deal better than had been reported at the opening. Reports reaching the "Times" up to Tuesday last indicate that this
summary of the fishing of the second week of the season and later is a fair one. At} Waitahanui fish have been still running upstream, and some good fish have been taken at the Groyne and in the Lupin Stretch between it and the Bridge. Conditions have not been good at the mouth, but in any case the mouth fishing at Waitahanui is not expected to be good at the opening. Some fish up to seven pounds and odd ounces have been taken upstream, and some nice
conditioned fish have been seen in the smokers. Several reports from the western - bays area speak of catches averaging from four to five pounds, with sixty per cent of fish taken in good condition. A party out for four days took several limits, both trolling and fly-fishing, in the Waihaha and Whanganui localities, with the largest fish six pounds. Another party out for three days in the Waihaha and Waihora areas ' reported similar fishing, with two fish over seven pounds. One report indicated that similar fishing had been had in Whakaipo and Whangamata Bays, but with perhaps a slightly higher proportion of poorer fish than mentioned above.
Two visiting fishermen who divided their fishing about equally between fly-fishing and trolling, and who have spent the first fortnight of the season at Taupo for nine successive years, stated that this season they had had better fish and better fishing than last season. They fished mainly between Taupo and Te Karaka Point, going some days as far as Whakaipo Bay.
