HELPED BUILD BRIDGE AT TAUPO IN 1870

Mr James Johnson Woods, of Auckland, recently celebrated his ninety-ninth birthday at the home of his son, Mr A. M. Woods, of Whangarei. As a youth Mr Woods worked with his father on the construction of a bridge over the Waikato River at Taupo, help in the construction of which was given by men of the Armed Constabulary gaijison at Taupo under Captain (later Major) Gascoigne. Still, active in mind and body Mr Woods attributes his long life partly to many years of blowing the bassoon.
