SOLICITOR-GENERAL DIRECTS HOLDING OF INQUEST
BODY NOT FOUNDThe Solicitor-General, Mr H. E, Evans, Q.C., has directed Col. J. D. Swan, Coroner, Taupo, to hold an inquest into the death of Garthon Griffith Simmons, which is believed to have occurred on or about August 25th, 1952. The circumstances of the case are that Simmons, who was an engineer, 32 years of age, a retfurned serviceman of World War II, was i employed by the Ministry of Works. j He was driving a bull-dozer en- j gaged in earth-work on the left j bank of the Waikato River a short j distance below the bridge on the j Taupo-Putaruru Highway at Ati- j amuri. The bulldozer was being j backed when it fell into the river. Simmons was seen by other employees being swept downstream in the swift current, the last glimpse of him being when his iiead 'was noticed above water some distance below the scene of the accident. The river in the locality contains rocks and rapids. The body was not found. There appears to be no doubt that Simmons met his death, and the Solicitor-General considers the case a proper one for the holding of an inquest pursuant to Section 8 of The Coroners Act 1951 and has directed accordingly.
