NEW CANDIDATES
Col. J. E. Barton. "I am offering myself as a candidate for election tc the Council believing I can be useful in that capacity to the residents and ratepayers of Taupo. I have had twentyfive years experience in administration of the affairs of a group of,
Boards whose properties and funds are very considerable. I disapprove of party politics entering into local body affairs and if elected will support or oppose measures rather than persons. I will support a sound but elastic town planning scheme, and a water supply primarily for fire-fighting purposes in the business area. I do not promise lower rates but will endeavour to ensure that ratepayers get value for their money." ❖ ❖ Mr J. L. Burge. "As a candidate in the forthcoming election I present the following views : — ( 1 ) Power : Requirements of the Borough should be met before transmitting beyond borough boundaries. (2) Town Planning: Essential, but more publicity, electors kept fully informed. (3) Water and Sewerage: Essential in a progressive community. (4) Footpaths: Additional and improved footpaths. (5) Baths, Cemetery, Recreation ground, etc., to be kept in reasonable order, not ailowed to deteriorate. I realise that all right thinking citizens will advocate the above, also that ratepayers, while desiring same, are concerned over possible increase in rates. Careful consideration of all factors involved must therefore be the keynote of council before formulation of any policy." vt> «j> T* Mr C. S. Currie. "As a Borough, Taupo's first Council have! an inspiring but trying time ahead, calling for much foresight and fortitude. Considering our residential population of 3000 and a fluctuating tourist population of several thousands, resolute planning is essential in pushing our town ahead with the impetus it deserves and with the resources at our disposal. Once Town Planning is ironed out to suit local conditions, such works as roads and stormwater drainage, footpaths, water supply, sewerage, sports facilities, etc., must receive priority attention. With civic pride and a constructve community spirit Taupo heads for a bright future. I offer my help."
Mr Arthur C. Foddy. "I offer my services as Borough Councillor believing that every citizen should endeavour to leave this world a little better than they found it. Secondly, I trust my experience as travelling representative and late manager of a wellknown mercantile firm will enable me to do something for the benefit of Taupo. As a humble student of economics, foreign affairs and political economy I have travelled many countries extending over thirty years', including the United Kingdom and the whole of New Zealand. It have seen the latest and best and believe this experience can be of use to Taupo, my home of adoption. I am at your service."
Mr Te Takinga Arthur Grace. "I stand as a candidate following several requests by ratepayers Pakeha and Maori, one of the main factors being if successful I would perhaps be of assistance in bringing Maori ratepayers and the Borough more closely together, thus enabling the former to realise their responsibilities as citizens. I am on several administrative bodies, being Chairman, Northern Tuwharetoa Advisory Council; depu-ty-Chairman, Tuwharetoa Trust Board; Member, Aotea District Advisory Council; member Tuwharetoa Rural District Fire Committee. All the above are constituted under Government regulations. I served three terms on the Taupo Road Board under the chairmanship of Dr. Armstrong. The tar-sealing of Main Street being done during that period." * ife, Mrs S. A. Kent. "In accepting nomination as a candidate I appreciate that my election as a member of Taupo's first Borough Council would be an honour and a duty of considerable responsibility. The scattered nature of Taupo's development makes the provision of ordinary household amenities a serious problem. Without a complete knowledge of the state of the Borough's finances it is hard to say now which problem should be tackled first. But I sincerely believe that the progress of Taupo warrants the provision of ordinary amenities." Mr Ian T. Logan. "May I introduce myself to the electors — Ian Thomas Logan, age 35, married, with two children. Resident and ratepayer of Taupo for seven years and have owned my own business for that period. Bearing the above facts in mind it will be obvious that I have a vital interest in the present and future welfare and development of Taupo. I offer myself as candidate with the support of the Businessmen's Association. If elected I pledge myself to work harmoniously with other successful candidates for Taupo's progress and the best interests of ratepayers and, residents alike." vt> vt> TMr W.*N. Morris (Jun.) "In offering my services to the public of Taupo I wish to state that I will do my best to aid the progress of our town and the welfare of the community as a whole." v\
Mr. J. M. Stanley. "As citizen and ratepayer, resident in Taupo for several years. I offer my services, if required, to the electors. I am under no obligation to any groups, political or otherwise, only to consider the requirements of the Borough. My support is assured for any measures needed in the just and orderly control of the district and to assist in maintaining common-sense values, and the well-being of citizens present and future. May the people elect a council fully representative of every section of the community. I ask everybody to record their vote." j •J* i Mr. Mervyn Svensen. "As a member of the younger generation all I can offer is a promise to do what is best for the Community as a whole without personal prejudice. I will do my best to consider the opinions of the older and wiser generation against those of less mature minds. I acknowledge the need for Town Planning, Greater Amenities, Better Roading, Footpaths, etc. Taupo has a great future for tourists, industry and farming, and it rests with this council to assist in its development. Vote for those you
think can render the best service to the Borough." ❖ sjc Miss A. Wehringo. "I am standing for the Borough Council because I have been in Taupo since it was a very tiny village with few residents, have seen it grow slowly but surely and would now like to take a more active part in its future development. Civic pride, perhaps, but also a very earnest desire to do my best for my home town."
