FIRST MAYORAL ELECTION
COL. SWAN NOT STANDING Discussing the forthcoming mayoral election with the Taupo Times, Col J. D. Swan, who has been De-puty-Chairman of the Town Board during its present term, stated that he would not be a candidate for mayor. He would, however, be accepting nomination for the Borough Council. Col. Swan said that during the past month he had been approached by several ratepayers and asked if he were prepared to stand for the mayoralty, and to these enquiries he had replied as follows, About the time the Local Gevernment Commission visited Taupo, he had, as Deputy-Chairman, discussed with Mr Story, the Chairman, possible candidates for a mayoral election and informed him that, aT though he did not see eye to eye with him on all matters, if he stood for election and was unopposed he (Col. Swan) would not accept nomination against him. No matter what their difference of opinion was, Col. Swan knew Mr Story was sincere in his opinions and that he had given the best of service to Taupo during his term as Chairman. On the other hand, he had said that if Mr Story did not stand, or if there were other candidates, he would be prepared to stand if nominated. Now that Mr Story had accepted nomination, and at the moment there appeared to be no further nomniations, he would not be a candidate for Mayor. Some time ago, said Col. Swan, he had more or less made up his mind not to stand for the Council, but at the request of some ratepayers he had reconsidered the matter and had agreed to accept nomination for the Council.
