This picture is reproduced from a photograph lent to the "Times" by Mr G. P. Reid, Taupo, and shows the site of the present township of Taupo as photographed from a point in the vicinity of the Misses Moody's house overlooking the Waikato Outlet. The tall posts on side of the Outlet carried a rope or cable which was used in connection with the ferry crossing the river at this point, which was where the route from Auckland and the Waikato to Hawke's Bay crossed the river, and along which runners carried military and other despatches during the years of the Waikato war. The photograph shows the military redoubt, situated north of the present Police Station residence, which was built during the period of the Taupo campaign against Te Kooti by men of the A.C. Force under the command of the late Col. J. N. Roberts, N.Z.C. The righthand building in the Redoubt was the messroom, the exterior walls and roof of which are still standing. The other house was at a later date used as a residence for the Telegraph Linesman. It was demolished a few years ago and some of the timber from it was used in the construction of the present Twn Board Offices. The earth walls of the Redoubt and the enclosing ditch may still be seen.
