BASKETBALL NOTES
MATCHES AT TOKAANU On Saturday last two teams from Taupo travelled to Turangi to play matches against Tokaanu teams. Results were as follows: — Tokaanu seniors 8 Taupo seniors 6 Tokaanu juniors 2 Taupo juniors 9; Tokaanu seniors 9 Taupo juniors 8; Tokaanu juniors 5 Taupo seniors 18. The outstanding player on the' field was Marie Henley who played j first forward for Tokaanu. Although a junior and still a pupil at Waihi Convent she more than held her own in senior company and was very fast and sure near the goal. Terry Elkington, a teacher at Turangi School played a good game in the home defence. For Taupo, Betty Walters and Ruth Jenkins made an excellent combination in the forwards. Between them they scored all the goals against Tokaanu Seniors. The defence, Mina Scott, Naomi Chase and Margaret Pitiroi, had their hardest game of the season. But for their splendid work many more goals would have been scored against Taupo.
Taupo Juniors put up a splendid performance against Tokaanu Seniors, and a number of them were good enough to have earned a place in the senior team. In this team Helen Livesey, Shona George and Jewel Rakei showed up best. The Tokaanu Junior team included some very small girls. They promised well, but could not be expected to make an impression on the bigger girls in the Taupo j teams. The Tokaanu players are expected to pay a return visit to Taupo before the season ends, probably on October 17th, and it is intended to hold a knock-out tournament, and a function at which local basketball trophies will be presented.
