FIRST MAYORAL ELECTION

NOM1NATIONS CLOSE OCT. 9th Nominations for a Mayor and eight councillors for Taupo's first local election as a Borough will close at noon on Friday, October 9th, while would-be electors who have not yet made application to have their names placed on the Supplementary Roll have only until Friday next, October 2nd at 5 p.m. to do so. Mr J. E. Story, the present Chairman of the Town Board, will be a candidate for the Mayoralty, and at the time of going to press a nomination form, which had already been signed by a number of electors, was still in course of being completed. Mr Story has served four terms on the Town Board, and has been Chairman during the current term of the present Board. The Taupo Times on Monday last mentioned to Mr C. Vedder, a member of the present Town Board, a report that had been current to the effect that he was likely to be a candidate for the Mayoralty. Mr Vedder stated that he would not be a candidate. He had been asked by several electors to accept nomination, but had replied that at the present time he felt that he was "serving his apprenticeship," as it were, in local affairs. Mr Vedder referred to the present Board's Chairman, and said that Mr Story had worked hard and conscientiously for the welfare and progress of Taupo. "In my personal opinion," said Mr Vedder, "it would only be fitting if Mr Story were to be given the opportunity of filling the position of Tupo's first Mayor." The Times enquired of Mr C. S. Currie, Secretary of the Taupo Businessmen's Association, whether the Association intended nominating a candidate for the Mayoralty, and Mr Currie stated that the matter had been discussed and it had been decided not to do so, though several nominations would be made for the Council. It has been reported that Col. J. D. Swan, Deputy Chairman of the Town Board, has been asked to stand for the Mayoralty. At the time of going to press Col. Swan was absent in Wellington, and the "Times" was unable to get in touch with him to confirm this report.
