ROYAL VISIT AND TAUPO

NOT ON THE LIST ■ 1 k " During recent weeks a report has been current in Taupo that Her Majesty the Queen would visit Taupo, during her stay in the Rotorua district. It has been said that Her Majesty would spend a day on the Lake, and it has been recalled that her parents, then the Duke and Duchess of York, spent a fishing holiday eamped at Kowhai Flat on the Tongariro River, at the southern end of the Lake. The report was referred by the Taupo "Times" to the Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington. The Departmental reply was that Her Majesty's stay at Lake Rotoiti was to be a rest period, during which there would be no official engagements. Her Majesty's activities would therefore follow her day to day wishes. There had been no mention of a visit to Taupo, nor to any other place during this rest period. It would seem that the Departmental reply aoes not preclude the possibility of Her Majesty visiting the district, but makes it clear that any visit would be unofficial and dependent on Her Majesty's personal wishes when the time for her stay at Rotoiti comes. It is certain that if Her Majesty does visit the district she will receive a spontaneous welcome in keeping with the people's deep feelings of loyalty.
