NEW LAKE HOTEL

START ON CONTRACT At an unofficial ceremony held at short notice on Monday morning, Mr J. E. Story, Chairman of the Taupo Town Board, turned the first sod for the new Lake Hotel. Mr Story stated that he was pleased to know work was being commenced and hoped that when the hotel was completed some organisations would not find it necessary to go to Rotorua for conferences but would be able to enjoy themselves in Taupo's perfect setting. Interviewed after the ceremony, Mr J. M. Graham, district supervisor for the contractors, N. Cole Ltd., stated that it was the aim of * the firm to complete the building as quickly as possible, with a view to the hotel opening early in 1955. The date would depend on the amount of local labour available, | and he was looking forward to obtaining as much support as possibie from local tradesmen. The contractors are carrying out many building undertakings and are specialists in hotel work. The Lake Hotel will be the eleventh built under the supervision of Mr Graham commencing with the Masonic at Napier. Among more recent projects which he has handled have been the hotels at Putaruru, Matamata and Tokoroa.
