THE WEEK'S GOLF

EWERT SHIELD MATCH The Taupo Golf Club's team played their second Ewert Shield match of the season against the Putaruru Glub, at Putaruru, on Sunday 20th. The first match, played at Taupo in April, gave Taupo 13 points to Putaruru's 12, but in the second match they failed to hold their lead, Putaruru winning 20 games to Taupo's 3 and retaining the Shield. Results were as follows (Taupo names first) : Graham halved with Burkitt, -Rameka lost to Andrews, E. Smith lost to Fenwick, Brown lost to Surridge, Cheal lost to Philcox, Young defeated Pasley, D. Neame defeated Shirley, S. Neame lost to Marshall, Collet lost to Bradshaw, Ryan lost to Spraggon, Pearse lost to Haworth, Woodward lost to Inman, Miss Branson lost to Mrs McDiarmid, Mrs Hullten defeated Mrs Bramble, Mrs Vedder lost to Mrs Root, Mrs Douglas lost to Mrs Halkett, Mrs Young lost to Mrs Spraggon, Mrs Collett lost to Mrs Hamilton. Although some very close games were played in the fourball matches Taupo failed to get a win. The day was very fine and warm with pleasant playing conditions, and as usuai the Taupo team thoroughly enjoyed their matches with the Putaruru players. In the first round of the Taupo Ladies' Championship Mrs Colbeck defeated Mrs I. B. Logan and in the Championship Flight Mrs Barton defeated Mrs Cheal. The men's Winter Challenge Cup match, played on Saturday 19th, resulted in Messrs. Woodward and Irvine defeating Messrs. Stephenson and Young. Mrs Hullten and Miss Branson, of the Taupo Ladies' Golf Club visited Whakatane last week to play in the Whakatane Ladies' Club's three day tournament, held in ideal weather conditions. Miss Branson qualified second in the Open Championship, but was beaten in the semi-finals. Mrs Hullten qualified first in the third group of 16 players. She was beaten in the finals, receiving the runner-up trophy. Both ladies were full of enthusiasm for the Whakatane course which was in perfect playing condition. The men's match at Taupo on Sunday 27th is a fourball Stable- , ford. On Thursday October 1st the ladies play a Stableford.
