SUCCESSFUL SPRING SHOW

HIGH QUALITY EXHIBITS The Taupo Horticultural and Beautifying Society's Spring Show, held in Rickit's Hall on Thursday September 17th, was an outstanding success. Mr G. F. Colbeck, president of the Society, welcomed those present and particularly competitors and visitors from other centres, and called on Mr J. E. Story, Town Board Chairman, to declare the show open. Mr Story congratulated the prize winners, but stressed the part played by other exhibitors who provided the competition for them. In the decorative classes there were not as many entries as last year, but the quality of the entries was high, as was also the case in regard to the daffodils. Mrs Van Veen, of Putaruru, who judged the daffodil classes, stated in conversation with a "Times" representative that the general standard of the exhibits was excellent and that they would have held their own at any other show. Referring to Mrs L. Stephenson's exhibit, in the open class, No. la, twelve varieties three of each, representing not less than four divisions, which won the first prize, Mrs Van Veen said that in her opinion it would have taken first prize in either the amateur or the open class at the previous week's National Daffodil Show at New Plymouth. It was an outstanding exhibit, and taken vase by vase it could not be faulted. Mrs Van Veen's remarks were borne out by other comments heard. Another group of exhibits that sliowed excellent quality and drew much attention comprised the exhibits of polyanthus in the Cut Fiowers section. A collection of over seventy orchid blooms, which had been liown from Sydney that day to Mr Alan Pye, for exhibition at the Show, excited much interest. They were grown by Mr W. C. Taylor, of Qantas Airways, Sydney. Mr G. F. Colbeck, Society president, commented on the encouraging increase in the exhibits in the children's, novices and intermediate section. Entries by the Girl Guides and the Oruanui School were of fine quality. One young exhibitor, Barbara Watson, of Te Awamutu, who has competed for four years, will now have to exhibit in the Intermediate classes, having this year been a winner in the novices class. The list of prize- winners was as of follows. Champion Blooms in the daffodil classes: — Mr Alan Pye, Champion of Champions, Div. 2a, "Royal Romance." Mr G. F. Colbeck, Div. 3b, "Portlight." . Mrs L.
