BUSINESSMEN'S DEPUTA--TION

MEETS TOWN BOARD A deputation from the Businessmen's Association, consisting of Messrs C. S. Currie, Ian Lqgan, W. N. Morris and E. T. Smith, met the Chairman and members of the Town Board last week, to discuss matters of interest to the business community. Information was sought as to community lighting in the main street shopping area, and at the request of Mr J. E. Story, the Board's Chairman, Mr Lloyd Mandeno, engineer, outlined the usual procedure. Power was supplied at an annual rate, and the practice was for business men in the area concerned to form an association which dealt with the power supply authority. The usual system was to have fluorescent lights about ten feet apart. It is understood that the Businessmen's Association intend to form the necessary community lighting association. Information was also sought re the matter of sewerage in the business area, and Mr Mandeno gave general information as to the problem and referred to drainage systems now being installed at Kaikohe and elsewhere. M. Story gave details of a conference already held by the Board with Health Department inspector, who had reported that septic tank sanitation in the business area would be quite satisfactory for some time to come, and that there was sufficient room to install septic tanks. With regard to pedestrian crossings in Tongariro Street, and the marking of the road for angle parking, Mr Story said that the Board had had this matter in hand for some time, it having been delayed by the absence of the Ministry of Works road sweeping machine. The Transport Department

had approved of two crossings, one in the vicinity of Russell's Store, the other at the Women's Rest Room. These, and the lining of the street for parking, would be attended to as soon as possible. It is reported that the M.O.W. sweeping machine is now back in Taupo.
