TAUPO GOLF PROGRESS
REPORT ON COURSE Visitors to Taupo for the school holidays will notice many improvements to the Taupo Golf Club's course. With the coming of spring, new growth is showing and greens and fairways are greening up. The growth should be heavier than ever, as the result of regular topdressings. The turfing of tees No. 5 and 8 has been an expensive piece of work, but will add greatly to the pleasure of players, and the appearance of the course* The committee hopes to turf tees 3 and 4 in the near future. No. 7 green is coming away well, now the effects of the flood are disappearing. The trees and shrubs planted in the last few years are now showing up well, and in a short time will add to the attraction of the course. The new 9 holes is progressing well. All the fairways have been cleared and giant disced, and after more discing and levelling, the committee hopes to sow the fairways in the autumn of 1954. The greens, which were sown in March last, have grown very well and come through the winter very satisfactorily. In preparing the area, as many pine trees as possible, were left to provide boundaries, hazards and shelter. Now the cleared areas between fairways are being planted in large clumps of Oregons, Lawsons, larches, etc., which should add greatly to the natural beauty of the course, and be an asset to the club in years to come. The committee has decided to hold a tournament during Labour Weekend. On the Saturday afternoon there will be a mixed fourball bogey match, and on the Sunday, a 36-hole medal competition. Approaching and driving competitions will be held in conjunction with the medal rounds. The annual one day tournament, which has proved so popular with visitors, will also be held on Wednesday, December 30.
