For some twenty years following the turn of the century the S.S. Tongariro ran the tourist and mail service between Taupo and Tokaanu, there then being no car or bus services round the Lake. Wood was used for fuel, and the crossing was done in from 2½ to 3 hours. The Tongariro seen above as she left Taupo, became a house-boat folowing cessation of the service, and her hull may today be seen on the western shore of the Bay about a mile from the Taupo Wharf. —Photo supplied by Mrs W. Power.
