I TAUPO v. PUTARURU ti The Taupo High School basketball ■ (girls) and Rugby iboys) teams travelled to Putaruru on Wednesciay, August 19, to play Putaruru High School, and thougJi both teams were defeated the day was enjoyed and the hospitality of the Putaruru staff a.nd pupiis much appreciated. Played in a strong wind the basketb^ll ended Putaruru 20, Taupo 12. 'Taupo were unabie to manage conditions until the second speii, Putaruru scoring 18 goals to 3. In the second spell Taupo played the better ©f the two teams, but poor goalmg xuined the chances. Taupo scored 9 goals in this half to reduce the margin from 15 to 8. H. Livesey and J. Rakei combined well in the goal and were supported by S. George, M. Hurst and G. Woodward in the centre, with H. Andrews the best of the defence. During this deason G. Woodward and H. Andrews have shown considerable improvement and are to be coiigratulated on their keenness and play. The football ended Putaruru 15, Taupo nil. Playing against a cold .strong wind Taupo heid Putaruru to 6— nil in the first half, the Taupo forwards outplaying their opponents But poor handling by the outside backs spoilt scoring movements. F'aulty attacking allowed Putaruru to score, and a penalty was soon kicked Jrom in front of the posts. ! Taupo forwards tired in the second .spell and the Putfcruru forwards bfoke through, three tries resulting from loose rushes. H. Reid, fullback, played soundly and saved many tries By falling on the ball. K. Rameka 4s first five-eighthS played an excelpnt game, passing and kicking gudiciously but lacked support. B. Wall, half, stood up to overwhelmijng odds and all his passes found his ieam-matei ; ! In the forwards H. Whetu excelled jas No. 9 in playing a No. 8 game. A. Crowthef and M. Hurae played well. R. Rameka as breakaway in ihe first half won the ball in the lihe-outs every time to set his backs in motion. As second five-eighths in the second half he played very 4oundly but lacked outside support. During the season H. Whetu, M. Hurae. A. Crowther (hooker), K. Rameka, R. Rameka and H. Reid have shown promising form. High School v. Staff ! In the annual basketball match, $taff v. School, the Staff emerged victors by unorthodox play, 7 goals 6 with some assistance fr'om the feferee, Mrs Salt. Mr Osborne ileadmaster, proved a "tower" of strength in the goal, being able to 4rop the ball through the ten feet Hiigh hoop, though Misses Walters and 4 I)enize had to retire, unfit at halftime. Mr P. Hoggard as rover played well in all thirds of the court. i
