CAR OUT OF CONTROL

ELDERLY WOMAN INJURED A car driven by Mr Ronald Flyger, of Maungaturoto, ran off the TaupoRotorua main road at 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday last, partly ascended a bank on the left of the highway and then feil to the road and turned on , its right side. The accident, which j was caused by the tie-rod breaking off, ('rendering the catf unsteerable, ■ occurred near Mr I). Hussey's resi- 1 dence on the Forty Mile Fiat. Mr Flyger, who was accompanied by his wife, was on his way from Napier to Rotorua. Mrs Flyger was severely injured, both ankles being broken and chest injuries being caused. Mr Flyger escaped with bruises and shock. Mr Flyger managed to get out of the car, but was unable to extricate Mrs Flyger, who was jammed behind the steering column. Taupo Ambulance Called Mr Weir, of Hastings, who was travelling to Taupo, notified the Taupo Police Station by telephone from Wairakei, and Dr D. A. Richards proceeded to the seene, as did the Taupo St. John Ambulance Brigade's ambulance driven by Mr L. Sharp and Constables E. H. Rowlands and W. D. Mills. Dr Richards treated Mrs Flyger, but it was some time before it was possible to remoye her from the vehicle Mrs J. E. Booth, of the Brigade's Nursing Division, entered the disabled car and held the injured woman for some time while the car was being righted. A passing motorist rendered assistance by cutting the steering wheel spokes with a haek-saw to relieve Mrs Flyger of the pressure of the wheel on her chest. Among those who were at the scene were Senior Traffic Inspector B. Muggeridge, of Rotorua, and Chief Traffic Inspector Saunders, of Hamilton, who eontrolled the traffic while efforts to extricate the injured woman were being made. The patient was taken by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital. Mrs Booth's efforts to assist and eomfort the imprisoned woman won high praise from those present.
