TAUPO SCHOOL AFFAIRS
MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taupo School Committees was held on August 4, Mr W. L. Haines presiding over a full attendance of members* Mr J. R. Osborne. Headmaster, was also in attendance. Mr Osborne reported on the visit to Hamilton made by Mr W. J. Murray, Committee secretary, and himself, to discuss school matters with the South Auckland Education Commission, and on the advice of the Commission's Transport Officer it was decided to • eommunicate with the N.Z. Road Services, Rotorua, re the transport of school children living on the Roto-rua-Taupo Main Highway. It was decided to approach the Town Board with regard to either grading of the road-side on the School's Tamamutu Street frontage or formation of a foothpath there. Several cases had occurred recently of children having been pushed off the bank in front of passing motor traffic and several narrow escapes from serious injury had been repoi^ted. In one case a child had landed on the mudguard of a car and only good brakes had prevented a bad accident. Jt was decided also to ask the Board to go into the matter of parking space at the Ruapehu Street main gates and at the Tamamutu Street gate near the Dental Clinic. The Headmaster's report stated that the primary roll stood at 375 and the secondary roll at 46, and at the end of the week the average roll for four weeks should be 371, which would allow him to ask for the immediate appointment of a Senior Primary Assistant. Arbor Day was to be held on August 7 when special films were to be shown. The Home and School Association's Ball had yielded a little over £30. The Headmaster suggested that the School Committee and the Home and School Association might combine to organise a Field Day at the School early in the Third Term for the purpose of raising funds. No notification had yet been reeeived of a successor to Mr W. R, Ogston. Maintenance work done or arranged for included the fixing of down pipes at the School, the replacing of the old tank. the re-sealing of the top of the old tank-stand, and the commencement of putting the main playing area in order, by the School. The see-saws had now been completed and were to be in commission during the following week.
