WAR MEMORIAL FUND
FINAL RESULTS i ' \ The campaign for th.e Taupo Distriet War Memorial Hall Fund reached its closing stages on Friday last, j'uly 3rd., when the Memorial Hall Fund Committee held a final meeting. The Committee had already handeci over to the Town Board all nioneys in hand, so that the Board could claim ihe pound for pound subsidy payable by the Government, A further ninety-two pounds io hand since last weeks figures, as given in our columns, brought the final total to £492 17/-. The additions to the subscription list appear below. Col. J. D. Swan, Chaiirman of the Committee, has handed the Times a / letter, dated July 3rd., in which, affer referring to the final result as noted above, he summarises th,e campaign and its results as follows: — "This amount of £492 17/-, together with th,e money iraised by the 1949/50 Queen Carnival, and the 1952/53 Taupo Christmas-New Year Carnival, makes a grand total of money raised, including the subsidy, of over £14,000. I am unable to give you the exact figure, as int.erest up to June 30th., on moneys previously banked, has not yet been ascertained, but the Town Clerk should be able to giv.e you the final figure in time for your next issue. "The Committee regret that they were unable to raise sufficient money to insure that Taupo had a debt free Memorial Hall. As you are aware the eontract price for the hall was £14850. To this amount has to be added any extiras to the eontract, the Architect's fees, the cost of equipping the stage, kitchen and the Hall plus th.e cost of four to five hundred seats. The extra amount required will, I understand, be raised by j the Town Board, but unfortunately i this will not carry the £ for £ sub- ; «idy. ''As Organiser for the Residents and Rat.epayers5 Queen in the R.S.A. Carnival, Organiser for the ChristmasNew Year Carnival, President of the Taupo R.S.A., and Chairman of the Committee, may I be permitted through your paper to thank all those I'atejpay/etrs, residents and visitors, Maori and Pakeha, who worked and contributed so generously to raise funds for the Memorial Hall. I should like, also, to thank the Directors and Staff of the Taupo Times for their gen.erous and active co-operation. "As the Memorial Hall Committee went out of existence after their final meeting this evening (July 3rd.), all futur.e communications with reference to the Memorial Hall Fund should be addressed to the Town Clerk. I am, etc., J. D. SWAN, Chairman.
