BOOKMAKING CHARGES
FINES TOTAL £110 In the Magistrrates Court at Taupo, on Saturday last, before Messrs Y. T. Fail and R. Anderson Bak, Justices of the Peace, charges that they did carry on the the business of bookmakers were prefeared against William Alfred Rogers, tobacconist, and Elsie McNicholas, married woman. Both defendants pleaded guilty. Prosecuting, Sergt. Duncan, of Hamilton, stated that Mrs McNicholas had admitted taking bets totalling £55 up to 11 a.m. that day. She had one pirevious conviction for conducting a lottery, when she had been fined £3. She was not in a large way of business and had stated that she had not intend,ed to carry on business when the TA.B. opened their Taupo office. Sergt. Duncan stated that on May 23rd. a special constable had laid bets with Rogers, who had stated that he had given up bookmaking operations afteir the Ellerslie June meeting. When the premises were searched on the moraing of the hearing tberc* was no betting material on the premises. Rogers had not previously been befcire the Court. Both defendants were convicted, Rogers being fined £50 and Mrs McNicholas £60. i
