MR WILLIAM HICKEY

The death in Rotorua Hospital, on Monday, June 22nd., of Mr William Hickey, of Waiotapu, remov.es one of the well-known coach drivars of ihe early days. Mr Hickey, who was 79, is survived by four sons, three of whom are farming in the Waiotapu Valley, and two daughters. Born in Otane, Hawkes Bay, he went to Rotorua as a young man for treatment for rheumatic fever. He remained in the district as a coach driver, and was well known in Taupo and Tokaanu. He bought the Waiotapu Hotel in 1904, holding the license until the hotel was burnt in 1931, and was well known to the trravelling public of the Taupo - Rotorua region. He took up land in the Waiotapu Valley, which has been farmed by his family for many years.
