WAIRAKEI BUS TERMINUS
change to taupo wanted A letter from the Transport Department, Auckland, was received at the Quarterly Meeting of the Taupo Businessmen's Association on Tuesday, June 9th., in reply to a letter from the association with regard to a ttransfer of the bus terniinal from Wairakei to Taupo. The letter stated that the pcsition was that tb,e N.Z. Railway Road Service depot was at Wairakei, and that M aiirakei was the terniinal point of th(e Depairtments particular iieenses. The license over the route from Wairakei to Taupo was held by the Hawkes Bay Motor Co. Ltd., and that Company would no doubt oppose strongly any attempt at alteration. Considerable discussion took place and it was agreed that it would be difficult to arrive at a satisfactory arrangement between the Gompany and the Road Seiwice. It was considered i however, that if the nrp*™+
.ation continued it would be still more to flnd a solution later. The jhigher freight rates which iresulted j together with the inconvenience caus,ed to the travelling public, would furjther tend to reta;rd the progress of j Taupo. "The position is iudicrousf? ; stated a member. "When we go to j Auckland we don't have to change j ouses at Otahuhu, nor do we have to ; change at Bay View when we go to | Napier/' There was no valid reason , iy passengers to Taupo should have | to spend t-hre.e-quarters of an hour at ; a depot five miles away before completmg their journey. The Chairman, Mr Vedder, considered that domestic matter between two organisations should not be allowed to hold up progress. There must be some way out oi the diffieulty, and they would find that way only by taking* every opportunity to press for an alteration. It was decided to write to the Town Board asking for their assistance towai d a transfer of the tevminus to 1 aupo.
