("The rcason wrhy some anglers wanted these licenses to he abolished was because the manneirs of som.e week-end fishermen were intolerable." — News Item.*) The Tongariro Anglers' Club Was full of ffame and smoke, The manners of the week-end men Had got beyond a joka The beggars came from near and far And bagged the choicest pools, They fished with rough and ready rods And broke unwritten rules. j And when they hauled a beauty out j They rushed straight in again. The Club men couldn't get a turn, j It filled them all. with pain. \ Up spake one irate angler, | With indignation hoarse,,
"Let's 'wipe' the bounders' licenses, And bar them from the course!" The Tongariro Anglers' Club With loud applause resounded, Gone were the dark and dirty looks An peace and joy abounded. Until a wily angler there, With voice both suave and pohshed, Suggested manners might be best, If fishing were abolished. Applause at once grew louder still, With glee they laughed and joked. The Minister was written to, All licenses revoked. The Taupo fishing now is gone, The Lake is lonely, frightful, But the manners of the week-end men Are gentle and delightful. — Tauponiard.
