This picture of the famous White Terraces, destroyed in the Tarawera Eruption, June 10th., 1886, is from a negative made by the late Mr Josiah Martin, a noted pioneer photographer. We are indebted to Mr E. F. Lloyd (Geothermal Project staff) for the use of the print. The small peak to right of the Terraces is Rainbow Mountain. The hill in front is Rotomahana Hill. The righthand summit is Maunga-onga-onga, and the slope on extreme right is Te Hape-a-te-Roa. The steam at its foot is from the neighbourhood of the Pink Terraces, which were also destroyed. The present Waimangu Valley hes in the middle distance below Maunga-onga-onga. See adjoinsng article.
