CORONATION TREE PLANTING
Beautifying Society's Gift Following an offer hy the Horticultural nnd Beautifying Society to a number of trees to the Town Board, a tree planting ceremony to rnark the coronation of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held at 2 p.m. on Coronation Day, June 2nd. Members of the Society and the Board gathered at the foot of Tongariro Street, and trees were planted there and also at the foot of Ruapehu Street, between the Lake front road and the ciff edge facing the Lake. A sycamore Was first planted by Mr JE. Story, Town Board ehairman, following which six silver birches were planted by lady members of the Society. These were Mrs Thomas, wife of the first patron of the Society, Dr Thomas; Mrs L. Stephenson, Mrs EL E. Shepheid, Mrs J. D. Swan and Mrs G. F. Golbeek, whose husbands were the first and subsequent presidents respectively of the Society; and Mrs Hv Peart, convener of the first meeting of the Society. Protective frames have been eiected round the tr'ees, which should make an attractive memorial of an historie occasion.
