TONGARIRO ANGLERS' REQUEST

Taupo Fishing Enquiry The Tongariro Anglers' Club is requesting the Government to set up a Royal Commission into the Taupo trout fishing. The Club is reported to want the fishing season to extend from October 1 to April 30 on the Lake, and from December 20 to July 31 in the streams entering the Lake. I The Club also sugg'ests separate li- j eenees for Lake and river fishing and 1 a limit of 15 fish per rod per day instead of six fish. Some Tongaiiro anglers are reported to favour the abolition of daily, week-end and weekly licences and the issue of half and whole season licences only. One leason given for the latter proposal is that the manners of some weekend fishermen are alleged to be "intolei'able." Present Seasonal Dates The season recently ended closed on May 31st for both river and Lake fishing. For two seasons prior to that the Lake fishing opened on November 1st and closed April 30, and the stream fishing opened Decemhei' 1st and closed May 31st. It was found that the closing of the Lake fishing season hefore the stream fishing season, intensified overcrowding on many of the stream waters, and the last Wiid Life Conference recommehded therefore that the closing date be the same for both types of fishing water.

Three Year Research During the past three years a research project, under the direction of Mr Hobbs, Senior Fisheries Officer, Marble Department, has been carried out in the Taupo Fisheries District, and it is expected that a report on this work, the first lar'ge scale research yet done into the Taupo fishery, will be presented to the annual ! Wild Life Conference to be held at | Turangi on Saturday, July 4th. Some' little surprise has been expressed locally at the Tongariro Club's reported request, in view of the fact that the expected report on the research project is expected to be made shortly, and it has been suggested that the move might perhaps have been delayed until it had been learned what recommendations the report contained as to future fishery policy.
