Harl'ow, S.M., on Frida yT last. Leonard Bergman, William Douglas McFadgen, and Edward Waldegrave, were eharg-ed with fishing between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Giving- evidence, Ranger P. J. Burstall stated that at 1 a.m. on January 22nd. he saw the defendants fishing at the mouth of the Waiotaka Stream. When he flashed his forch on, they bolted along the beach. and he gave chase, whereupon the defendants dashed through the gorse at the top of the beach and into the swamp. He called on them to come out but received no reply. On 'going into the swamp he found Waldegrace. He then picked up a rod lying on the beach, and commenced to reel up the line. He found that this led him into the swamp, and on coming to the end of the line he found
Bergman securely hooked on the fly. This elimax of the Ranger's evidence considerably brightened the atmosphere of tlie Court. Bergman and Waldegrave, vvho appeared and pleaded guilty, were each fined £2 10/-, with costs £1. McFadgen, who did not appear, was fined £3 10/-, with costs £1 .
