TAUPO SCHOOL AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Taupo District High School was held on May 5th. when there were present Mr W. L.* Haines, Chairman, Mrs V. /S. Pearce, Miss | K. O. Lewds, Messrs W. L. Fulljames, | A. Kennedy, C. E. Baker, J. W. Rob- ; ertson, and W. J. Murray, Secretary, | Following formal business, the Secj retary was instructed to wi'ite to the | South Auckland Education -Commis- | sion, Hamilton, expressing the Committqe/s satisfaction yat the Commission's decision to call tenders for the erection of three further classrooms. These are to be on the school hook between Titiraupenga and Kaimanawa Streets, and will bring the total number of classrcoms up to thirteen, which is the maximum number allowed in a primary school. When the future High School is built~ two rooms in the present High School building will become available for the Primary Department, but after that any further Primary expansion will have to be by way of tbe establishment of a second school. Coxmecfion to Power Supply. It was decided to apply to the Town Board for the connection of the school, wrhich has already been wired, to the town power supply, and to apply to the Education Commission to have the Dental Clinic and Pump House wrired and for an electrie motor to be supplied for the water pump. It was also decided to obtain tenders for the conversion of the school radio equipment from battery to 230 volt supply. Acting on a report from the Headmaster the Committee authorised the purchase of an Aldis film strip projector. This is a British made projector of Ihe highest quality. Film strips for the projector are obtained from the Education Department. D ealing with educational subjects of many sorts, they comprise about 35 separate pictures, and are of great value in teaching. Moved manually through the projector, a picture can be held on the screen as desired. This modern type of projector needs no black-out curtains for classrooms, as the pictures are projected in daylight. School Bus Services. The Committee members have received enquiries re school bus services, but in all eases the children for whom such services wrere sought did not live far enough away to quality. The Department will only sanction services when children under ten years of age reside at least two miles from the nearest school, while children of ten or over must reside at least three miles from the school. School Attendances. 1 he Headmaster, Mr J. Osborne, report s that the attendances at the School during the term which ended last week have averaged 93.2 percent., which is a very satisfactory figure, and is probably a record for the school. The number on the Roll at the close of the term was 332 in the Primary Department, and 50 Secondary Department, these figures being an increase of 32 Primary and 23 Secondary; over the numbers at this time last year. It is expected that by the end of the year the Primary roll number will have reached 360.
