SHELL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
WELL KNOWN IN TAUPO Miss Manika Wodzicka, B.Agr.Sc., who is well known in Taupo, has been awarded one of the two Shell Agricultural Scholarships for 1953. She is the first woman to win one of these scholarships, which are tenable for one year by a student studying for the Masterate degree. Miss Wodzicka is the daughter of Professor Wodzicka and the Countess Wodzicka, who have a holiday house in Taupo, In 1952 Miss Wodzicka spent a year at the R ua ku ra Animal Researeh Station to gain research experience, and while there became interested in the problem of the tearing of lamb pelts. With pelts last season worth 16/- eaeh the problem of the large percentage that tear and beeome useless is a serious one, and for her Masterate thesis Miss Wodzicka is studying the effect of normal growth, nutrition and shearjng on sheep skin thickness, chemical composition and histology. These studies, sa,ys Miss Wodzicka, will be but a beginrtiiig to an investigation of New Zealand pelt problems.
