Boring at Aratiatia.

The expl oratory boring being carHed ut at the Aratiatia Rapids is now nearing the completition of the preliminary stage. Between forty and fifty holes have been drilled, to varying depths, in order to ascertain the nature of the rock lying below the area and the suitability of the locality for the construction of hydro-electric works. The first stage in exploratory work of this nature generally consists in the drilling of sufficient holes, in conjunetion with other research, to enable a decision to ie made on the apparent suitability of a given area. I-f the results of such work appear to be favonrable the next stage is usually the sclection of a tentative site for the contemplated works, which site is then much more intensively tested by further boring.
