The canoes shown above at the Waikato Outlet, Taupo, were used regularly as recently as 1920 by Maori Children coming to Taupo School from Nukuhau. Similar canoes used on the Lake in olden times would have had top-side hoards lashed to the upper edges of the hull. Today there is probably not a single canoe in usable condition on Taupo waters. —F. H. Gradwell, photo.
