SHELL FIRE NEAR LAKE

DANGER AREA DEFINED / The Secretary for Internal Affairs has recently written to the Taupo Commercial Launeh Owners' Association, advising that the matter of live shell practiee at Tihoi had been referred ito the Army Department. This matter was nientioned in the Timets of February 11, 1953, wheii it was recailed that at the Wild Life Coiif erence held in Taupo on November 6, 1952, the view was expressed that no portion of the shore of the Lake should be closed to use by anglers, picnickers or sportsmen. At that time the danger area from shell fire practiee s was defined as lying to the north from the shoreline of the Lake at Kawakawa Bay. The letter referred to now advises the Launeh Qwners' Association that the Army Department has replied to the Department of Internal Affairs as follows: — "The danger area does not approaeh in any locality, ineluding Kawakawa Bay, closer to the shoreline than a thousand yards. It is possible that t'his has not been made clear in public announcements and in future steps will be takeri to rectify this. Launeh owners, anglers and others can therefore use the shoreline at any point ,on the Lake, ineluding Kawakawa Bay, without restriction." A notice reeeived by the; Association from the Marine Department, Auckland, last week, advising that live shell practiees were to take place on March 12 and 13, defined the danger area as lying to the nortb of the shoreline of the lake at Kawakawa and Whangamata Bays, but clear of it by one thousand yards. Angiers and boating people will weleome this offieial clarification of the position, with its assurance that no eneroachment on the use of the Lake shore by anglers and other members of the public is to results from the Tihoi shell practiees. r _
