HATEPE LETTER

(Own Correspondent)

Friday, Feb. 13th. Early in January Mr P. Buystall, Pisherixs Officer, and as'sistants released 364 American Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in the upper reaches of the Hatepe River. Much track cutting- work was involved and as stocking with this fish requires promptness the job was a strenuous one. Anglers should be grateful to this fine working team for tiheir efforts in delivering this new contribution to their sport in good. condition. This new species has hard. fighting qualities and will be ready for angling in about three years. The prospective fishing area is situated above the new Hyd.roelectric Power .Station. The small lake formed has been cleaned and the reserve under Government supervision will in tirne provide sc.litude and varied sport, deer and rabbits abounding in the country surrounding it. It may well beeome one of our finest assets for attracting overseas tourists. It will be interesting to compare the weight the new trout attain here with that reached in America. A census of fishermen was taken pn February lst. covering the whole district, but results are not yet to hand. Mr M. J. Krivan was al-lotted the Hatepe area, and the date was chosen as being after the inflationary holiday period had passed. Among those on holiday at Hatepe recently are Archdeacon and Mrs F. Hall, Gisborne; Mr and Mrs C. R. Hall, South Island; Dr and Mrs Gunn, Gisborne; Mr and Mrs Cunninghame, Tauranga, are guests of their daughter Mrs J. Ladd. Miss Morehu has returned to Rotorua Hospital. Miss Haromi Morehu has entered AYd-» more College to eomplete her studies for the teaching profession. Misses Rereahu and Patricia Morehu 'have returned to Hukarere College. vVe recora with regret the sudden passing at Wanganui of one of our house-holders, Mr Preston, and of Mrs Dean's father, Mr Mason of Palm er st on N orth .
