CRICKETERS BEAT GOLFERS
ON FIRST INNINGS Conditions for the match between the Cricket and Golf Clubs played on January 25th. were almost exactly the reverse of those pertaini&i: last year when tho game was also played on the last week-end in January, and the ground was hard and the wicket easy. This year the wicket was softer and runs harder to obtain. When the Golf Club Captain, Jack Woodward, won the toss he elected to field and the two left-handers Forster and Macken opened the Cricket Club innings to the bowling of Errol Smith and Collett. The latter soon tempted, Forster to sweep the ball round to leg where he holed out in Hullten's capacious hands. M'acken was showing his best form tihis season and the partnership with his captain Sam McKean added 30 runs of which his share was 17 including three foufs. McKean collected runs methodically, but after Maekeirs departure Collett struck a purple patch when three wickets fel] in one over to his off-spinners. Then David Woodward held the fort whilst 20 runs were added when in successive overs, Rameka h^d hina Lb.w., and after being hit for a six and a four by Sam McKean, haid him also caughlt by Collett attempting" another big hit. Alan Clarke came in at No. 11 in spite of a badly damaged toe but after hitting* a four he was out to the second ball after lunch and the innings elosed for the poor total of 93. The Golf Club commenced their innings disastrously when Beale was unlucky enough to be given out l.b.w. first ball and L. Cheal, the Golf Club President who batted especially well
m last year'.: match had his stumps snaitered by Sunnex .fourth ball. With the score at 11 Woodward was caught at extra cover. A long partnership between Graham and Collett for the 4th. wicket seemed quite a possibly. Both batted steadily and attempted no risky strokes alfhough the latter was forunate to escape when he g*ave the keeper a sharp chance with his seore at 10. The total was still only 25 when an un- ; fortunate hesitation resulted in Graham being run out. Twelve runs later Collett caught his foot in his tee when endeavouring a long- drive •and was caught and bowled and Hullten after gaily hitting Clarke for 6 was caught by the same bowler from a stinging drive in the next. The innings died for the pretty good golf total of 46. In the second innings the Cricket Club tried fto score fast and knoeked up 93 runs in just over an hour, but they left the golfers an impossible task. The golf club opened mucth more confidently and when rain . terminated play they had lost 2 wickets for 36 runs in 20 minutes of play.
