SURCEASE IN TAUPO
An Octogenarian's Soliloquy There are sorne things as dear to me As jewels rare to the comioisseur, They are as simple as ean be, And quite unsought by epicure— A little cottage on a hill, A garden that is not too neat Where trees and grasses grow at will ; A.nooky cbrner'with a seat And flowers glamourously dressed Like ladies flaunting in their best ! But where ? Ah ! Taupo was my choiee, For she is Tavoured by the sun That pnakes the heart of age rejoice When Summer days have ceased to run In my diminutive domain I have rid urge to erave for wealth, For I, forsooth, have greater gain In Feaee, Contentment, goodly Health, Leisure that is not Idleness With books to cultivate the mind And none to ban of all my kind ! Fi'opi my retreat the seene includes Grim mountains, three of Kingly mien A dominant yet graeious queen ! And when the Sun at even-tide Deseending from his throne on high Has seattered largesse far and wide Who eould forget the Taupo sky ? I love the elosing hour of day, The friends who share the wine that cheers, The soothing pipe and laughter gay. Ah ! Life deals gently with my years !
