MARCHING GIRLS
COLOURFUL DISPLAY IN THE DOMAIN The Girls' Marching Competition in the Domain on Friday, January 2nd. drew a very large crowd of spectators who showed by their apolause their appreciation of the deportmen and paraded. This event teams which paraded. This event was one of the highlights of the harnival, and was of special interest in that it was the first ap--ea^ance in uniform of two Taupo marching girls teams, who acquitted themselves most creditably having "egard to their comparatively short oeriod of training. The weather, though threatening, kept fine, and the presence of the crowd, the marching teams, with the back ground of trees, made a olourfui scene. The ground was no.t ideal for good marching conditions, a point noted by the judges in comment at the close of the events. Results. Open Championship: — Royalettes (Rotorua), Leader, Joyce Whitley, 365 points, 1. Troubadours ( Opotiki ) , Leader Maureen Morris, 3381 points, 2. Clive H.B. R.S.A., Leader, Lila Rowe, 289 points, 3. Crusaders (Taupo), Leader Betty Walters, 285 points, 4. 'Costumes : — Troubadours, 92 points, 1, and cup. Clive R.S.A., 881 points, 2. Royalettes, 871 points, 3. Crusaders, 851 points, 4. Aggregate Points: — Royalettes, 421 points, 1 and cup. Troubadours, 3891 points, 2. Crusaders, 312 points, 3. Clive, 289 points, 4. On the marks awarded for leadership, Joyce Whitley (Royalettes), was placed first; Maureen Morris (Troubadours), seeond; Betty Walters (Crusaders), third; and Lila Rowe (Clive), fourth. Juniors. The Taupo Girl Guides presented a junior marchin-g team (Awanui), led by Jill Woodward, which earned a round of applause for its smart appearance in uniforms of white corV duroy velvet and Mediterranean Blue, and good marching. The team was awarded a challenge eup, to be held for one ycar, and was warmly commended by the judges. Eacb member of the winning team * in the Aggregatp Competition was awarded a niedal. At the conclusion the Chairman of the Town Board (Mr J. E. Story), complimented the teams on their performance. Appreciative re~ marks were also made ^y the judges, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded by acclaimation the Clive team, whicih on aecount of the lack of billeting aceommodation, had to make their return journey that day. j The judges were Mr N.
