TAUPO'S CARNIVAL SEASON
GIRL GUIDES OPEN THE PROGRAMME Taupo's Carnival season, with its objective of raising the balance of the funds required for the War Memorial Hall, opened on Saturday last, December 20th, with matinee and evening displays of singing and dancing by the Girl Guides, trained by their Captain, Mrs Peart, and presented in Rickits Hall. It was a well-dressed show. The frocking was charming, the v^ried designs being displayed very nicely by excellent lighting arrangements on the stfcge. There were choruses by the Girl Guide Choir; song and tableaux by the Brownies, " God's Little Garden," with Patricia Casson as the Fairy Queen and Sonya Beale as the soloist. The latter was also the soloist in a musieal movement with chorus with Joy Kennedy, Roseanne Redwood, Elaine Darlington, Betty Watson, Gillian Woodward, Beth Snooks, and Karen Reid. Maadi Hough and Barbara Watson as the dancers. Bandbox Fairies," by the Rewa Sisters, was an attractive number. Barbara Watson displayed a natural talent for the ballet in a charming "Peasant Dance," "Tara^eHa,"' and
another dance number. Sonya Beale showed to advantage in her song and sketch number, and the item "An Enchanted Evening." " Storm Imps Duo Dance," by Joy Kennedy and Barbara Watson was another good number. Other concerted items by the company included " Rendezvous" and u Chinatown Fantacia."
Others taking part in the programme were LynBull, as the "Little Gardener," and Colleen Erickson, " Cupid." Pam Clark, in " Rendezvous," Barbara Lash and Zelda Tawera, in " Chinatown," and Margaret Donnelly and Rona Boggs in " Waltz Destiny."
As a voluntary effort on behalf of the War Memorial Hall Fund, involving many hours of training and industrious preparation for the costuming under the supervision of Mrs Peart; the contribution of the Girl Guides to the Carnival programme was most commendable. The very efficient wardrobe mistress was Lieutenant Snooks. Thanking the public for their attendance and support, the Carnival Organiser, Mr J. D. Swan, paid a tribute to the Girl Guides, Mrs Peart and Lieutenant Snooks for their very fine effort on behalf of the War Memorial Hall. The Guide, movement, he added, was a splendid idea for the girls of Taupo and he wished them every suecess for the future.

APPEAL TO OUTSIDE RATEPAYERS In a circular appeal to ratepayers living outside Taupo the Hon. Organ-, iser of the War Memorial Hall Fund Campaign (Mr J. D. Swan) emphasises the need for a Hall or Civic Centre for Taupo and adds : " If the local body were to build a Hall it would mean borrowing between £16,000 and £17,000 (which would not qualify for subsidy) at 4 per cent. repayable over 25 years. This would mean an extra charge on the rates for principal and interest of about £1190 a year for 25 years. " We have to raise £3000 to get a debt free Hall, which would otherwise cost the ratepayers £29,774 spread over 25 years. Your donation therefore is not only a matter of civic pride, which is taken for granted, but one of sound financial economy."
