TAUPO'S REPRESENTATION

\\UTH Taupo's rapid development i in settled areas and population there is a growing conviction that the interests of the community should be more adequately represented on local adminstrative bodies than they are. Taupo's inteirests on the Wai- 1 kato Hospital Board, for example, are represented by Mr Andrew's, of Rotorua. There is no representative of this community's interests on the Auckland Education Board. With the sub-division of the Auckland Education district and the constitution of the South Auckland administrative body, the case for direct representation derives some emphasis. These two instances are worthy of attention and possible action. In regard to the Licensing Committee controlling the hotels in this district the boundaries are those of the electoral district. Hitherto this has been the Waimarino Electorate, with headquarters at Taihape. Taiynarunui, a no-licence district is represented on the committee. Taupo, with licensed hotels, is not. Which is absurd. With the change in the boundaries ->f the electoral districts announced some time ago, Taupo passes into the Rotorua electorate. Steps should be taken to ensure that Taupo will be adequately represented on the Rotorua Licensing Committee. In accordanee with existing statutory provisions the election of licensing committees follows the Licensing Poil at the General Election. The scheduled date being the second Tuesday of March. If, however, at any time Parliament is cnssolved before it has been two years in existonce — as was the case with the Assembly elected previously to that now constituted — no licensing poll is held at the fresh election, anc needs no election of licensing com^ittees. The existing committee? thus have an extended term of office, ending on the Mairch following

the next General Election and Licensing Poll. Before that time arrives serious attention should be given to the question of adequate representation for Taupo on the new Rotorua Licensing Committee.
