CLEARING ADJACENT CROWN LANDS

The member of the district, Mr P. Kearins, has forwarded for publication a eopy of a letter received by him from the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. Corbett, as follows: — aRepresentations were made to you recently by Miss A. Wehringo, Secretary of t'he Taupo Ratepayers5 Association, who aske4 for inforu mation regarding the clearing and development of the Crowm Land north of Taupo township. "Prior to my receiving these representations I had arranged that representatives of the Lands Department and Forest Service should eonfer with representatives of the two privately-owned Forest- Companies which adjoin this area with a view to deciding on ways and means of effectively combating this very serious fire hazard. "This conference has already taken place and I am hopeful that arrangements tentatively entered into can be confirmed and will eventually lead to this whole area being grassed. "I appreciate the concern of the Taupo Ratepayers' Association but do wish to point out that development of this area to grass is obviously going to be a eostly undertaking for the general taxpayer and I would hope that local people will rally to assist and not hinder the project if it is finally proceeded with."
