In the above picture, the late Mr Russell B. Graham, of Wairakei, who inaugurated the first motor-mail service between Rotorua and Taupo, is seen stranded in the wilds owing to a breakdown. As such eventualities were expected to happen occasionally Mr Russell took the precaution of having with him in the mail-car carrier pigeons which he used to convey signals of distress, and according to the chronicles of those times the arrangement worked very well, and help was dispatched on the arrival of the winged messengers.
